Nurturing Faith and Foundational Skills: A Kindergarten Scope and Sequence For Literacy, Math and Multi-Modal Learning

Nurturing Faith and Foundational Skills: A Kindergarten Scope and Sequence For Literacy, Math and Multi-Modal Learning

Audience: Kindergarten
Descriptor: As of the 2026–2027 school year, the revised Ontario Kindergarten Curriculum (2026) is mandated in all publicly funded kindergarten classrooms across Ontario. This revised curriculum represents a significant shift from the Kindergarten Program (2016), with a heightened emphasis on explicit, evidence-based instruction in foundational literacy and mathematics, as well as STEM learning. By producing a detailed scope and sequence that intentionally aligns the Ontario Kindergarten Curriculum (2026) with the Ontario Catholic Religion Expectations (2020), this resource addresses a critical gap in current system supports. Its primary emphasis is on foundational literacy and mathematics development, offering a coherent, month-by-month plan that educator teams (OCTs and DECEs) can follow collectively throughout the school year. Direct connections to Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ (2025) are embedded through specific lesson references, allowing Religious Education to meaningfully enrich academic learning rather than compete with it. Alongside the scope and sequence, there are professional learning tools such as Catholic-centred mnemonic cards, sound scenes, math talks, and multi-modal, multi-sensory infographics which will further support evidence-based instructional practices aligned with both curriculum and our Catholic identity.
