3.8 - Awakening Awareness with the Examen and Gratitude Journals

Ignatian spirituality teaches that we can “find God in all things.” The classic spiritual practice of the Awareness Examen and a contemporary variant, the gratitude journal, can help us, both in our own prayer life and with our students, to discover God`s grace at work in our everyday experiences. Naming and reflecting on the gifts and challenges of each day invites us to gratitude, deepens our appreciation of self and others, and opens us with wonder to possibilities. These simple, invitational and inclusive practices empower students to celebrate and forgive themselves, and be open to God`s invitations.

Intermediate students, who struggle with basic math concepts, require additional opportunities to consolidate understanding. However, math homework assignments with repeated drills are neither motivating nor effective. This session will explore ways to spice up homework with math games, websites, and open-ended activities which specifically support the needs of students in grades 4-8 as they develop conceptual understanding critical to their development. In this hands-on session, teacher-ready games and activities will be shared, and practical strategies and ideas will be discussed. Come join us for “inter-mediation”!

3.11 - Lunch & Literacy: A Successful Approach to Improving OSSLT Results

Creating positive academic experiences is critical to improving self-esteem, eliminating behavioural problems, and increasing learning involvement. Some boys feel reluctant to outwardly portray themselves as learners. Not surprisingly, boys do not do as well as girls on the OSSLT. Student Success Departments must address the needs of their students as they prepare for the OSSLT. Now in its fourth year, Lunch & Literacy, is a three-day tutorial program for identified grade 10 students and grade 11 students who were unsuccessful in the OSSLT. Come find out how to why students are sacrificing their lunch periods to improve their literacy skills.

Crossing many traditions and philosophies, the Golden Rule reveals a profound unity underlying the diversity of human experience. A 23 min accompanying film propels the viewer on a journey of discovery through self-directed explorations in art, music, rap and drama skits. Young people can explore ways of embodying the core values of "The Golden Rule".

3.16 - Social Justice in Novel Study

Within the context of social justice, this interactive workshop will show teachers how to use the young-adult novels by Joy Lynn Goddard to strengthen Literacy, Religion and Family Life Education. To that end, the themes of bullying, revenge, Internet safety, single-parent families, gangs, sports, adoption, racism, gambling and more will be explored. Presenters Ruthanne Finnigan, Joy Lynn Goddard, and maria Di Reto will provide Catholic educators with the tasks and techniques that promote reflective and creative thinking among students with diverse needs while linking Ontario Curriculum, Catholic Graduate Expectations and Character Education.
