Dr. Mark McGowan – ‘Old News, Fake News and the Good News: Navigating the Promise of Catholic Education in an Uncertain World’
The talk examines the many challenges facing Catholic education in Canada today and how one might learn from past Catholic leaders who also were forced to contend with uncertainty, opposition, and the financial realities of their own age.

Biography, memoir, diary and journal are a highly significant means of entering into the ‘soul’ of an individual. Equally, lives that demonstrate the values that shape us, the ethos that defines us, the very enfleshment of our mission, such lives as these speak to our collective need for models, exemplars of the tradition, icons of our faith-in-action.

Most Rev. Gerard Bergie, Bishop of St. Catharines – Celebration of the Eucharist
Bishop Gerard Paul Bergie was born on January 4, 1959 in Hamilton, Ontario. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 12, 1984 for the Diocese of Hamilton. He was named Auxiliary Bishop of Hamilton in July 2005 and ordained as a Bishop on August 24, 2005. He was named Bishop of the Diocese of St. Catharines on September 14, 2010 and installed on November 9, 2010.
He studied at St. Jerome’s College, the University of Waterloo and St. Peter’s Seminary, London, Ontario. He received a master’s degree in Divinity from the University of Western Ontario in 1983 and a licentiate in Canon Law from the University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum) in Rome in 1991.
Bishop Bergie is currently a member of the English Sector Episcopal Commission for Evangelization and Catechesis of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), Chair of the Education Commission of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario (ACBO) and a member of the Catholic-Lutheran Church of Canada Theological Dialogue.
