B10 – Serving Students who are Impacted by Poverty in the Classroom and School

Presenters: Susie Lee-Fernandes, Kate Remiz (Durham)
Audience: Elementary
Description: This interactive presentation would focus on serving the needs of students who are impacted by poverty in the classroom by building awareness and understanding around the inequities and challenges associated with poverty. A budget activity will give participants an idea of the choices that might be made within a family experiencing financial hardship, as well as the opportunity to reflect on how school practices might impact these families. Seven researched differences between middle class and low-income students will be shared, followed by a discussion about what educators can do to mitigate some of the negative effects of poverty. Participants will walk away with useful strategies that can be implemented in the classroom right away for the benefit of all students.
