A17 – Toronto: Social Justice in the Classroom and Beyond!

Presenters: Hasmig Zarokian, Jessica Zaccak
Audience: Intermediate

Description: This workshop, specifically for intermediate teachers will focus on the topic of Social Justice inquiry based learning. We will be using a cross curricular approach incorporating Language, Geography, History, the Arts, Religion, Fully Alive and Math. We will be using picture books, novels, current/past world events, tableau, spoken word, creative writing and various other various interactive teaching forms.
Some of the topics we would be addressing would be Indigenous issues/rights, persecutions in the past (such as the Holocaust, Rwanda, Armenian Genocide), Gender equality, child labour, importance of water, child soldiers etc. We will also focus on the goals that the UN has set in place to improve some of these issues. We will be highlighting culturally relevant pedagogy throughout the presentation. The final piece to the puzzle will be on how we as Catholics educators can make a difference in the world, and how we can empower our students to be change makers to the world. We would lead the teachers in many hands on activities, discussions and provide “”tool kit”” to take back to their classrooms.
